I finally met up with Jon last night after a stressful ride through Miami where I had to go back to the main land and bike on US1 downtown Miami. The only reason I didn’t get killed on that road was pour luck and the fact that there is a bike trail paralleling the worst parts of the major highway. The high above the ground going metrorail provides a somewhat winding but still ridable walking and bike trail that I could use for some parts and when it stopped I turned east a little ways which added on to the miles but also to my own security and definitely my life span.
Leaving Miami there’s Old Dixie Highway, the busway that also has a bike trail right next to it. Cars are prohibited on the busway, so the last part of my ride was quieter.
When Jon and I met at this very nice, a bit hippie-like hostel I was very stressed out, but the Mexican restaurant right across the street helped get me back my good mood with tamales and of course plenty of Corona.
Later we made a bonfire and spent the night talking to people from New York, Tennessee and everywhere. There were also a couple of Germans around but those folks are never too happy to meet other Germans when they’re on vacation.
It was so nice sitting there in shirt and shorts drinking more beer and enjoying the warm tropical night.
I am now going to enter the Florida Keys. According to somebody from the hostel it’s only 120 miles left to Key West. I still have two days left to get there, so that seems very doable.
I’m excited about these next two days. I’ll be the furthest south now I’ve ever been.
At night I’ll meet up with Jon again so we can stay at a cheap hotel somewhere on the Keys.
